Made New: From Wilderness to Wings

Years ago, I served as a counselor at a three-day retreat for teens called Chrysalis.

For those three days, students stepped away from everything familiar. They listened to talks about Jesus, about grace, about new life.

At first, many of them were guarded. Some skeptical. Some carrying heavy burdens.

It wasn’t immediate transformation. It looked more like struggle.

But by the end, something shifted.

One by one, they began to speak about surrender—about letting go, about trusting God, about something changing deep within them. They couldn’t always explain it.

But they knew:God was at work inside them.

This is the story of Easter.

Not surface change—but new creation.

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new is here!”— Second Epistle to the Corinthians 5:17

The cross looked like an ending.

But it was the place where transformation began.

The tomb looked silent.

But it was full of unseen work.

And then—resurrection.

The Wilderness Was Not Wasted

If Lent has felt like a wilderness season for you—quiet, stretching, even uncomfortable—

you’re not alone.

God often does His deepest work in hidden places.

“Behold, I am doing a new thing…”— Book of Isaiah 43:19

Even in the wilderness.Especially in the wilderness.

Maybe you’re in a “chrysalis” moment right now.

You don’t feel different yet.You don’t see the outcome.

But that doesn’t mean God isn’t working.

It may mean He’s doing something deeper than you expected.

Take time now to watch this amazing 10 min video about the process of metamorphosis. What resonates or stands out to you?

Reflection Questions

  1. Where have you felt “in between” this season—like something is changing but not complete?

  2. What might God be forming in you beneath the surface?

  3. What would it look like to surrender instead of striving?

  4. Where have you seen even a small sign of new life?

  5. What is one step you can take this week to live as a “new creation”?

Spiritual Practice

“Open Hands Prayer”

Each morning this week:

Open your hands and pray:

“God, I trust that You are at work in me. Make me new today.” Just as the sun rises in the east, reflect on the new things, situations, relationships, opportunities, feelings, etc. are coming up for you. Write these in your journal and ask for the guidance of the Spirit to show you what these new things mean.

Sit quietly for one minute.

Let that be enough.

Easter reminds us:

God is not finished.

Not with the world. Not with the story. Not with you.

Even now—He is making all things new.

Forever grateful for the resurrection of Jesus that made me a new creature.
