What Do You Smell Like?

Encounter: Find a a place of quiet and read through 2 Corinthians 1-6. Then go back to chapter 2 and mediate on verses 14-17.

There are seasons in life that feel beautifully clear.

And then there are the “in-between days.”

The days when we are waiting for direction.Waiting for healing.Waiting for courage.Waiting for clarity.Waiting for God to move.

That is where the disciples found themselves before Pentecost.

Jesus had risen.Jesus had ascended. The promise of the Spirit had been given. But they still waited in uncertainty.

Honestly, many of us know that feeling well.

We live between grief and healing.Between exhaustion and renewal.Between what was and what will be.And into those uncertain spaces came the rushing wind of Pentecost.

Not simply as a dramatic moment—but as the beginning of a new way of living.

As we move into the long green season of Ordinary Time, we remember that “ordinary” does not mean unimportant or dull. It comes from the word meaning “ordered” or “numbered.” This is the season where we learn to live daily life with Jesus. It is where faith moves from mountaintop moments into kitchens, workplaces, schools, neighborhoods, and everyday relationships.

Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians help us understand what Spirit-filled living actually looks like.

The Holy Spirit creates sincerity in us. Paul says he tried to live with “godly sincerity.” The Spirit is not interested in polished religious performance. The Spirit forms honest people whose inner and outer lives begin to align.

The Spirit also makes us carriers of Christ’s fragrance:

“Through us spreads in every place the fragrance that comes from knowing Him.”—2 Corinthians 2:14

I love that image.

Have you ever walked into a bakery and immediately smelled fresh bread before seeing it? The aroma tells you something good is there.

Paul says our lives should carry the aroma of Christ into the world:

  • mercy

  • peace

  • compassion

  • hope

  • grace

When people encounter us, what lingers behind?

Pentecost reminds us that the Spirit still fills ordinary people with extraordinary love.

Paul also reminds us:

“We have this treasure in clay jars…”—2 Corinthians 4:7

Clay jars are fragile. Breakable. Imperfect.

That’s us.

Yet God delights in placing His treasure inside fragile people so the world can see that the power belongs to Him.

This is deeply comforting.

You do not have to be impressive for God to use you.You do not have to have it all together. You do not have to stop being human before becoming Spirit-filled.

The Spirit shines through cracked places.

And perhaps that is the invitation this Pentecost:Not to strive harder—but to become more available.

To pray:“Holy Spirit, breathe again.”

Breathe into our church.Breathe into our homes.Breathe into our weariness.Breathe into the ordinary rhythms of our lives.

Because the fire of Pentecost was never meant to stay in the upper room.

The Spirit sends us into the world carrying the fragrance of Christ.

Carrying his fragrance with you,

Reflect & Gather:

Filled with the Fragrance of Christ

Opening Reflection

Describe a season of your life that felt like “the in-between days.” What helped sustain you during that season?

1. Spirit-Filled Authenticity

Paul speaks of living with “godly sincerity.”

  • Why do you think authenticity matters so much in spiritual life?

  • What masks or performances do people often feel pressured to wear?

  • How does the Holy Spirit help us become more honest and whole?

2. The Fragrance of Christ

Paul says believers spread the “fragrance of Christ.”

  • What qualities or attitudes remind you most of Jesus?

  • Have you ever known someone whose presence carried peace or grace into a room?

  • What “aroma” do you think our culture most needs right now?

3. Treasure in Clay Jars

“We have this treasure in clay jars…”

  • Why do you think God chooses fragile people instead of perfect ones?

  • How can weakness become a place where God’s power is revealed?

  • What encouragement do you receive from this image?

4. Transformation by the Spirit

Paul says we are transformed “from one degree of glory to another.”

  • Where have you noticed gradual transformation in your life?

  • Why is patience important in spiritual growth?

  • What practices help keep your heart open to the Spirit?

5. Ministers of Reconciliation

Pentecost sends the church outward into the world.

  • What does reconciliation look like in everyday life?

  • Where do you see division, hurt, or loneliness around you?

  • How might God use you as a person of peace this week?

Spiritual Practice: What is one situation in your life where you can carry the fragrance of Christ? Journal and pray about how the spirit is leading you to do this, share this with someone for prayer and then act. Then share the story with your church as a witness to these truths.

Closing Prayer

Holy Spirit, breathe again into our hearts and lives.Make us people who carry the fragrance of Christ into the world.Transform us in the ordinary moments of daily life.Help us become agents of reconciliation, hope, and grace.Amen.
