Seeking God, Finding Revival

Seeking God, Finding Revival

Encounter: Find a quiet place away from distractions and slowly read through Psalm 105:1-8 three times slowly. Underline or journal any words or phrases that resonate with you. Now read Jeremiah 29:12-13. Begin to write down how those words describe the character of God.

The Asbury Revival began in February 2023, when students at Asbury University in Kentucky lingered after a routine chapel service for spontaneous worship and prayer. The 50-minute service extended into a continuous, multi-day event that was characterized by repentance, confession, and the presence of peace and humility with visitors around the world descending on the campus hungry to experience the presence of God.

Students had been regularly meeting for prayer on campus in the months leading up to the outpouring, with one faculty member noting, "Even before the Asbury revival, we had assurance something was going to change".

Jeremiah 29:12–13 promises that when we seek God with all our hearts, we will find Him. This promise came true powerfully in Acts 1–7. After Jesus ascended, His followers didn’t rush into action — they gathered in prayer. They sought God’s presence, and in Acts 2 the Spirit came with power.

The church kept praying — in homes, in the temple, even when threatened. Prayer was their lifeline. As they prayed, revival spread: thousands were saved, miracles happened, and the gospel went forth.

Stephen’s ministry shows us the cost and power of revival. Filled with the Spirit, he boldly preached even though it cost him his life. But his death was not defeat — it ignited a movement. Persecution scattered believers, and revival spread even farther (Acts 8:4).

Today, revival comes the same way. Not through programs or plans, but through prayer, boldness, and wholehearted seeking after God.

We hear this throughout the scriptures, history and also through many contemporary leaders in the church. Here are just a few:

"God shapes the world by prayer. The more praying there is in the world the better the world will be, the mightier the forces against evil".  E.M. Bounds

"If God's people hunger deeply enough, God will hear and send revival... To seek God's face is far more than occasionally mentioning revival in our prayer. It involves repeated and prolonged prayer". Wesley L. Duewel

"We have come up with countless strategies to reach the lost when God promises that unity is the method that will work". In the context of revival, this means prayer and dependence on the Holy Spirit are God's chosen methods, not human cleverness. Francis Chan

"Prayerlessness is almost always a humility issue—the natural consequence of a heart that tends to believe it is good without God. ... Pride is the true enemy of your prayer life". Jackie Perry

With the escalation of war and threats of violence amid world concerns of the suffering of so many of the most vulnerable in numerous locations around the globe, we are calling the church to intercede.

We are joining with 95 nations. 885 virtual prayer rooms. 149,000+ hours of prayer… and counting. Christ followers from around the world are uniting in non-stop prayer from 1–7 September 2025. Click on the link to schedule your time for this special week of prayer.

Let us together lift up our hearts full of prayers asking beyond our own words for Holy Spirit to intercede as we cry out, let your kingdom come and let your will be done on earth as it is in heaven!

"History is silent about revivals that did not begin with prayer". J. Edwin Orr

Let us pray that our legacy as Christ’s church will not be silent!

  3. What can we learn from Stephen’s bold witness about sustaining revival today?

  4. What would it sound like for us as a church to write a Psalm similar to the themes of Psalm 105?
