Don't Drift Away

Encounter: Read or listen to Hebrews chapters 1-4, underline any words or phrases that seem to stand out to you. Read as though the letter is written to you personally and to those you worship with. What resonates?

Several years ago, I took a girls' trip with my daughter Megan, my sister, and my mom to Savannah, Georgia. One afternoon we boarded one of the large riverboats that cruise along the Savannah River. It was a beautiful day. The water was calm and everything seemed perfectly under control.

Then a storm appeared.

The wind became fierce. Rain swept across the river. What had been a relaxing excursion suddenly became unsettling. For a few moments the boat began drifting sideways. The crew worked hard to regain control, but it felt as though the storm had more power than the boat itself.

Thankfully, the storm passed and we continued safely on our journey.

I have often thought about that experience when reading Hebrews 2:1:

"So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it."

Most people do not intentionally walk away from God. More often, life happens. Storms arrive. Grief enters. Disappointment settles in. We become tired. Distracted. Overwhelmed.

And slowly, almost imperceptibly, we drift.

The opening chapters of Hebrews were written to believers experiencing their own storms. The writer's solution was not "try harder" or "do more." Instead, he continually points them to Jesus.

Jesus is greater than every competing voice.

Jesus is greater than every burden.

Jesus is greater than every fear.

Jesus is greater than every storm.

Hebrews invites us to listen carefully, hold firmly, enter God's rest, and come boldly to God's throne of grace.

Perhaps you are facing a storm right now. Maybe life feels sideways. Maybe you are weary from carrying burdens that seem too heavy.

The good news is that Jesus remains steady when everything else feels uncertain.

The answer to drifting is not trying harder.

The answer is drawing closer.

This week, spend a few moments each day asking:

"What voice am I listening to most?"

"What burden am I carrying that Jesus is inviting me to surrender?"

"Where is God inviting me to trust Him today?"

May we listen carefully, hold firmly, and come boldly to the One who is able to keep us from drifting.

Holding firmly with You,

Pastor Tammy
